Top 5 Issues Keeping Food Processing
Industries up at Night
The Indian food industry
is considered a sunrise sector due to its enormous growth potential and its
socio-economic impact. It is estimated that it is an industry of 8,258 billion
with a growth of around 8% per year, with a potential to reach 2,482 billion by
2020, with large investments in food
processing, technological innovation and infrastructure for agriculture.
India may be the world's food basket. India is the world's largest producer of
milk, legumes, sugar cane and tea, and the second largest producer of wheat,
rice, fruits and vegetables. Given that Indian agriculture is the main support,
around 60% of the population is supplied for their subsistence and contributes
17% of GDP. Below are some of the issues that sustain the food processing
industry at night.
1.
Preservation of raw food-
It is a major concern for the industry. In products such as dairy,
fruits and vegetables, meat processing, a small contamination can lead to the
destruction of many raw materials and can be very dangerous. Industries need to
have staff 24 hours a day to control raw materials, prevent deterioration and
infestation.
2.
Hygiene -Lack of hygiene cannot contaminate the raw
material but poison the finished product. Furthermore, sanitation not only
plays a role in the raw material, but also in processing. Establishing adequate
facilities for staff to adhere to proper personal hygiene also contributes to
meeting food safety requirements.
3. Toxin Removal- Food processing facilities rely on the use of
hazardous chemicals for sanitation and pest control. This approach should be
applied to reduce the risk of accidental environmental contamination during the
food processing cycle, which, if it fails, can cause food toxicity. Establish
sample cleaning and disinfection programs to ensure proper hygiene standards
are met and to reduce the risk of foodborne illness.
4.
Technology and Automation- India's
food processing industry is mainly made up of small and disorganized actors.
Lack of innovation in this sector leads the industry to adopt the same old
techniques and therefore a very low margin to improve performance. This is
hampering the progress the industry has to make, leading to more manual effort
to achieve its results and the use of more process time that can be reduced by
implementing technology. Implementing automation reduces processing time in
some processes, such as drilling or liquefaction.
5.
Increased Competition- Organic
products are gaining momentum in today's market, and food processing industries
are depleting nutrients from food products. Therefore, it is necessary to
include nutrition in food products or to maintain nutrition. With increasing
competition, food processing companies are always busy looking for innovative
ways to advance a market that uses low-resorted fruit as a sweetener.
