How to Manufacture Oxygen?
Oxygen manufacturing is the process of converting air into oxygen gas (and sometimes also hydrogen). The process has an oxidation chamber in place to convert air into oxygen gas. Oxygen is important to our existence because it is an element that is found in living cells (red blood cells, haemoglobin) and in some other non-bacterial species. It plays a role in respiration by converting water into carbon dioxide (an exhaust gas).
Types of Oxygen Manufacturing
There are three major types of oxygen production processes. Oxygen is used in chemical reaction catalysts and in aerobic respiration. Oxygen is used in aerobic respiration in which it combines with an existing air molecule to form an energy source. This is the most commonly occurring process in aerobic respiration.
Oxygen can be used as a fuel in internal combustion engines (common gasoline, diesel, etc. engine), an oxygen supply for military or aircraft engines and space shuttles, and as oxygen for applications requiring high levels of oxygen concentration, such as an astronaut's oxygen supply during a long space flight. In all cases, oxygen is used as a means of driving chemical reactions that release energy and increase the temperature of the enclosed environment. For this reason, the oxygen is mixed with fuel and compressed in an atmosphere.
In nonoxygen production methods, the primary sources of energy are sunlight, wind, and heat. Oxygen is needed to split water molecules into oxygen and carbon dioxide molecules. The process is known as Oxygen Radicalization and it occurs at a low limit in many chemical reactions. Oxygen is used as an oxidizing agent for burning certain materials, such as ores and metal.
Oxygen is one of the four main gases in our environment. Although oxygen is poisonous when inhaled, the presence in our bodies creates a protective barrier against most other chemicals. The presence of oxygen in our bodies makes it possible for us to convert carbon dioxide into carbonic acid, which is the major cause of acid rain. Carbon dioxide is converted into carbonic acid by the endothermic reaction between water and carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is sometimes used in methanol as an alternative to petroleum-based methanol.
Oxygen can be manufactured through the process of electrolysis, where electricity is passed through water containing carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide in the water reacts with oxygen in an exothermic reaction, producing heat that is used to drive an electrolysis cell. High-voltage electricity is also another way of creating oxygen. The process of electroplating of aluminium and gold is done by passing a high voltage electric current through an aluminium plate, which forms an active metal layer upon which the desired metal is coated. Oxygen molecules are then introduced to the metal plate, which combines with the other oxygen molecules present to form a final layer of the desired metal.
